It's been a while since I have written a GAADAD post, but with today's give away, I just had to write this!
I was in my car, on my way back to the house. And I was talking to a friend by way of bluetooth on the phone. One of the reasons that this was so magical - as the post title says! - is that this friend is the first person I told Give Away A Dollar A Day to almost 10 years ago!
I came up to a stop light, and there was a homeless person with a sign that said he is sleeping in his car and is just simply hungry. I had already given away my dollar for the day, but thought, why not, I'd like to help this man. I told my friend on the phone to wait just a bit while I started looking through my wallet. I had a few bills but only a single $1 bill. I was in a quandary because I wanted to give him $2. The I noticed a $5, and decided to just go for it!
I rolled down my window, and honked my horn for the homeless man came over to my car. When he was at my window, I gave him the $5. He was very appreciative, you could see it on his face! I also asked him for his name. He said, "John". I don't remember where I had heard this from, but when you give something to a homeless person and address them by their name, it makes them more than just someone on the street. I said, "Blessings to you, John", and he had an even bigger smile on his face now, as he walked away from my car!
I resumed my conversation with my friend on the phone - the light was still red - and noticed that the sign John was holding had blown out of his hands. He made a few attempts to recover it, but to no avail. I think it slipped under one of the cars in line behind me. He then came back to my car and I could tell he wanted to say something. So I rolled down my window again, and John said, with his biggest smile yet - and this one with a ton of appreciation in his eyes - "I haven't had anything to eat in two days". And then he started walking towards the convenience store on the opposite side of the street. The sign was not longer his highest priority, getting food in his hungry belly was.
The light turned green. I pulled away, looking in my mirror as John crossed the street to go to the store. I told my friend on the phone that I was filled with so much joy that I had completely where we were in the conversation. This giving put me on Cloud Nine!!
Blessings to John. Blessings to GAADAD. And, blessings to you!!
